On our couch in the living room, my Mom put a small pillow, upon which is embroidered the phrase, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, I have become my mother after all." Oh, how true this is.
The more time I spend with these kids, the more I realize I am becoming my Mother. First of all, that is totally fine with me. Secondly, I didn't realize it would happen so quickly. It caught me off guard when I said something to one of the babies this morning and actually looked up expecting to see my Mother standing in the room. Scary.
There is one phrase that is a direct hand-me-down from my Mama. The beauty of this phrase is that it can be used in multiple situations, as long as you change either the volume or the tone of your voice. The Phrase: "Oh honey..."
-There's the "oh honey" when your forehead is blazing from a fever, or when you've just thrown up everything inside of you.
-There's the "oh honey" when you've done something wonderful, like a perfect report card that will go straight to the refrigerator door.
-There's the "oh honey" when she walks in your bedroom and sees well....less bedroom and more mess.
-There's the "oh honey" when you shlump sheepishly into the kitchen covered in mud, with pine needles braided into your hair, and a blob of freshly dug clay in your little hand.
-There's the "oh honey" when she is changing a diaper and it's positively disgusting, but she still feels badly because she knows it probably means you don't feel well.
-There's the "oh honey" when you tell a funny joke that isn't something Grandma Alene would approve of, but she still thinks it's funny, whether or not she's willing to admit it.
-There's the "oh honey" when she has more faith in you than you have in yourself.
-There's the "oh honey" when you've done something you shouldn't have, and you immediately want to be better because you love her so much.
-And finally, there's the "oh honey" when she scoops you up in her arms, hugs you tight, and you know there's no better place in the world.
